Kathy Hunt-Murad

How it all began...

There is a baby picture in the old family album with Kathy laying on a baby blanket with Missy, her mom's tri color collie also on the blanket. Kathy was raised with the Lassie TV show and Albert Payson Terhune books. In 1970, all she wanted for Christmas was a collie puppy. Santa delivered and Kathy had her first collie. She named her dog Daisy. Kathy was elated! Daisy grew up and went to obedience class obtaining a high score of 198 out of 200. Then in February 1971, the Sylmar California earthquake struck. The backyard gate, Daisy's barrier to the busy street, was popped open by the quake. Scared, Daisy, who was just over a year, bolted through the open gate. For weeks the family searched for Daisy. Flyers were put up, humane society's were searched, and hours were spent walking and driving through the neighborhood. It was as if Daisy had just disappeared. Then, a tragic call came from animal control; they had received a phone call from nearby neighbors that had been vacationing and upon their arrival home, they had discovered a collie's body on their garage floor. Apparently, Daisy had been struck by a car, had run from the accident and died in the garage.

Kathy was devastated. Her mother Donna thought that a new puppy would help, but Kathy was adamant about not wanting a new puppy. Donna kept watching the ads and one day there was an ad for a female, blue merle collie puppy. This might be the right thing to help Kathy overcome her sorrow, Donna thought. Donna had to drag Kathy out to see this blue puppy. The puppy's owner brought in this fat, happy six-month-old blue puppy that immediately ran to Kathy. Kathy did not want to return this puppy's affections. Donna saw the connection this puppy wanted with Kathy and decided that eventually Kathy would warm up to the puppy. The breeder of the puppy added some stipulations on the sale of the puppy. She wanted the puppy to attend some puppy matches and have one litter. The puppy went home and Kadon collies were born.

This female was not successful in the show ring, but her first litter in 1972 saw success. Misty was bred to Ch. Antrum AllTheWay, a CCA WD. The litter produced multiple match winning puppies and two point earners. Once on the way to the San Diego Collie Club money match, there was a fender bender accident and Donna did not want to go. Kathy was heartbroken and adamant about attending the match, so Donna borrowed her mother's Cadillac and off they went to San Diego. Misty’s puppies were first, second and fourth finalists.

An unusual event occurred at an all breed show. Donna had discouraged Kathy from entering Cassy, Kathy's favorite, a tri female at the show because she didn't think Cassy had enough coat to compete. Kathy had an intuitive feeling about this show. So, Kathy earned the nine-dollar entry fee and sent in the entry unbenouced to her mother. At the show, Donna kept telling Kathy not to expect too much and Kathy kept telling her mom that she was going to win. Cassy did win Winners Bitch, then Best of Winners and then Cassy won 2 points by taking BOV from the classes over approximately 6 champions with Kathy showing her. Back in the seventies, the all-breed ring was filled with big name handlers on the specials and two points may have been 20 bitches. Young teenagers did not win easy in those days. Kathy was ecstatic and hooked on dog shows.

She only showed in Juniors several times and once was at the National at Disneyland in '73 obtaining a 4th place in a huge class of 13, showing Tinkerbell, Cassy's sister. Kathy preferred the conformation ring and regular competition to the junior ring. At the same National, Cassy was 4th in the 9-12 AOC class with Tinkerbell behind her in 5th place. Sundance, the blue brother, was out of the ribbons in 5th place in his class. There was a hiatus in the late '70's with Kathy returning in 1980 and purchasing two Ch. Stoneypoint Stalwart daughters that began the Kadon legacy with numerous winning placements at the National, specialty and all-breed shows.

Kathy has three children, Michael, 22 and Jennifer Murad 20, and Oscar (Chach) Razo, 13 and has been married to Oscar Razo Sr. for 15 years. Kathy holds a Master's degree in Organizational Learning and Instructional Technology and also earned two teaching licences, one in special education and another elementary education. She is currently teaching in the special education department at a high school. As a teacher, she has taught at the University of New Mexico and she won a Teacher of the Year award while teaching computer and education classes at The University of New Mexico-Valencia branch. Kathy graduated with honors when obtaining all three degrees.
